Moraira -
About 40 years ago it was just a small group of cottages gathered along the northern Costa Blanca coastline, these days Moraira is a popular but unspoilt coastal resort with plenty to commend it. Formerly administered by the nearby town of Teulada, Moraira is now an independent municipality and has developed as an exclusive holiday resort set in a protected bay and surrounded by beautiful mountainous countryside.
Until the recent development of the tourist industry, Moraira depended mostly on fishing for its survival but was also a renowned area for the growing of Muscatel grapes and for the making of fine wines from those grapes. The town still produces fine wines but its economy more reliant on tourism these days.
It would seem that what has protected Moraira from the absurd development which has blighted surrounding resorts, is the fact that it is a bit off the beaten track, being some distance from the motorway and from the busy N-332 coastal road. Moraira's permanent population of around 10,000 still rises considerably during the summer months but not to the extent of other towns along this coast. Despite this, it is still a perfect location for a holiday as the cooling sea breezes keep temperatures at an acceptible level during the hot summer months making it enjoyable rather than stifling, the backdrop of mountains gives protection from cold northerly winds in the winter, keeping temperatures higher.
Moraira has a couple of excellent 'Blue Flag' beaches which are safe and clean and great for families, the harbour is home to the Moraira Club Nautico which was inaugurated in 1985. The harbour is also the location for the popular Lonja (fish market) which is held every day (except Mondays). Moraira's weekly market is held every Friday beside the beach area.
Moraira is situated about 30 kilometres north of Benidorm and can be reached from the AP-7 motorway and from the N-332 coast road, it is about 55 minutes from Alicante airport (using the motorway).
